Despite recent headlines suggesting market volatility, mortgage rates have remained surprisingly steady, focusing on hard economic data rather than speculation.
January’s job market showed mixed signals. The economy added 143,000 jobs—less than expected—but revisions to previous months added another 100,000. Retail, healthcare, and government sectors led the way, while unemployment dipped to 4.0%. Wages also rose 4.1% year-over-year, surpassing forecasts.
Normally, weaker job creation would help lower mortgage rates, but the market remains focused on long-term trends. Meanwhile, December’s job openings report fell short of expectations, reinforcing uncertainty.
